Default Why do most people just lurk?

Why do most people just lurk?

I do admit that I am a person that just mainly lurks, however I still have trouble being able to answer my own question.

Why do most of us that could make a great Master/slave (depending on who you are) not post much on the site and take part? I mean I feel as if there is some stupid reason in our minds stopping us.

I have replied to a very select few advertisements that have caught my attention and I write out a personal response to each of them, but have never even heard back from any of them except from one. I feel like this is mainly because I am not an active poster, but instead an active lurker on here.

Therefore, can anybody answer my question as to why most of us just lurk? Can you lurkers reply too?

Pretty clear from my post count that I'm not a lurking person, I think it may just be that some people are less willing to contribute to the community past getting dares or doing s/m. A lot of these people only have posts in the slave master area- indicating this is the only involvement that they want to have - or that they do not know how to communicate elsewhere. Or at least that's how I see it.

There are also some who have wry low lurkerish post count but spend a lot of time in the chatrooms being involved that way

By this definition i'd be considered a lurker. When i found this site or any forums i find that im interested in i tend to just read at first until i get a good feel for the people that post. I don't have much knowledge on the area of s/m which is generally what im reading about on this site and im usually someone that only posts when i have something to contribute so with no knowledge i had very little to add. I've learnt a fair bit by being here so who knows maybe i'll start posting more often.

Pretty much any online community has far more lurkers than people who are active. On Facebook, a 0.5% interaction on a page's posts is a great response, so if 1 in 200 people clicks like or comments, it's considered a success.

There are many reasons people lurk- they are nervous about not knowing enough to answer questions, they think they will be ignored or mocked, they just don't want to, etc. I think the reasons for not being more involved will be as many as the number of people who lurk. But rest assured the issue of lurkers is not just one here, but is everywhere on the net!

Hmm... I prefer to read rather than write? Lol. I think it's more of shyness than anything else on my part... People have different reason I believe.

I pop on here every now and then to see what's up, but for an experienced dom, these forums frankly don't offer TOO much.

If I had a computer i'd post much, much, much more but it is a hassle to write and post using my iPhone.

So for me it is not wanting to go through the hassle I guess.

It's tough getting started. Most people have long profiles and signatures. When you first get here it feel daunting to fill out your profile enough so that if you do post you don't come off as a 'newbie' (BTW, very much a newbie)

I enjoy reading what others post more than actually getting involved. I do try and get involved when I can in chat though. I think I mainly keep to myself at first, but once I get used to the site and people more I will probably get a lot more involved in posting.

I don't post much do to a lack of something interesting to say on some of the things posted on this website or I would just be repeating what someone else just said. Therefor I refuse to post until I have something to add to conversation/thread.

Well. I personally don't post a lot because I find stupid to write a pretty much common dare of one line. As I write mostly in "Person above..." when I post, I try to be creative and my dares to be suitable with the likes/dislikes with the guy before. I prefer no one to post than to read silly dares. Still, I have some of those, and now I prefer not to post things like that. If I were creative enough I would post my own dares and so. Also, I'm new and I try to keep in pace and learn while posting.

As a lurker, I'll tell you why I lurk - I just like to read the boards. I don't have any interest in (publicly) participating in the site's activities. I registered to make it easier to navigate around, and to check out the chat room once or twice. But for the most part, I'm content with watching. And honestly, most of what I would post wouldn't be very constructive anyways (It's not shyness or anything. It's just not very nice.)
