Bought sand will be cleaner of course, but it comes from the earth as well. I recommend to thermally treat it anyways. You will look weird placing sand into the oven or boiling it, but the health is a must

Uncooked rice will be fine I think. Food products are controlled well in that regard. And it can be also more convenient/pleasurable/tortorous because of bigger grains
