As a newbie(ish) I need some advice about something

Sometimes when I'm using my vibe I'll reach this spot where it feels so intense it drives me insane, it's just by the clit but not quite on it, but the problem is, it's so intense that I normally slip off the spot and I can never find it again. A couple of times I've managed to hold it but I unintentionally chicken out, does anyone else get this and if so any advice on holding it?

Sometimes, yes. And I think you get that very intense feeling because you're so used to putting your vibrator in your clit, and neglect the areas around it, so those areas are not entirely used to the full strength that the vibrator can give, if it was directly placed on top of it.

But if you want to hold it on that place, try exposed your clit completely. This can be done by taking clothespins, placing them on each lip, and duct-taping those clothespins to your inner thigh. After that, use another clothespin to grasp the clitoral hood and expose the clit. Try finding that spot that way, and depending on what vibrator you have, you can tape it there or just keep it there.
