Very rude
I think it's very rude
If you meet someone you like at a bar, a club , a party or somewhere do you ask them how old they are. That would be considered very rude so why should it be different online. If someone askes me asl? in a first time conversation I stop talking and put them on ignore without hesitation I like to get to know people for their interesting personality or shared interests and only want to know people who seek the same. If age is so important to someone it shows how shallow they can be

What you wearing?" "go on cam" etc then expect to be put on ignore Most of my limits etc can be seen in my post at: http://www.getdare.com/bbs/showthrea...883#post132883

I said that I find it rude, but, after reading the ideas in this topic, I'm gonna say it's only rude when the first thing said is "OMG LOL ASL?!1!!1!" or something like that.
But it is a major turn-off to conversation without any sort of sentence around it. *EDIT* Also rude/conversational turnoff -- I recently got a PM with the subject line "Hey msn?"

I feel like its not exactly rude. Its more lame than anything. If you can't come up with a more creative way to find out someones info then you need to spend more time with people and less time online.

i dont find it horribly rude.
It is a bit though, asking first off. I mean seriously how hard is it to type "Hi" before Asl |

I sorta agree with the people who say ASL to start of a conversation is rude. However, if someone has added you and they have some confusing name and you are not sure of there age and sex, you have too. I dont want to talk to a 13 year who goes, "HEyz, gots aNy DAreZs?!!?!?!?! "

I usually ask after starting the conversation and a few pleasantries, although on this site I can usually tell by just looking at the person's profile, thus skipping the need to ask at all.

I use ASL just to see who i am talking to and if someone asks me about stuff i would like to know what age and sex they are before i tell them

It really annoys me, as both my sex and location are in my msn address, surely people only need to ask me my age.
If someone does ask me though, I just answer, saves a lot of bother. Unless it is a PM, which then I just delete it, no need to get angry. |

It actually depends on who is saying it, and what words accompany it.
If it is something like, Hi, how are you? bla bla by the way, what is your asl? Then that's fine. Though if it's hi asl??????? You get blocked.

noob added you
noob: asl? Yes, rude and annoying. I dont like it at all when people add me or talk to me and go asl. because my asl is on my profile. If you're really that interested, you'd check it right? X: Anyways, if you've had a friendly conversation for a while and then they ask, I won't find it superannoying, but I'm still wondering why they won't check my profile. |

As for if it's rude... I don't mind it so much when asked of me, but only if it's done in a decent way (pretty much as Betty said above), otherwise it just kind of irks me, why does it even matter what my ASL is if you don't know me? |

if you go upto a girl in a club and say "hey how old are you?" thats rude, same sorta thing on the internet, if you were to go up to her converse for a little while and then ask her how old she is then it's not rude at all, just you being curious and again same goes for the internet.
