Going camping with friend; want to experiment.

Hey, as the title says, one of my friends has asked me to go camping with him. We're both 16/m, and we'll be completely alone at night, and I would really like to do some 'experimenting' with him.
My only worry is I don't know if he likes guys or not; can anyone suggest the best way to go about this, or have any past experience of something like this?
