"A man is undergoing surgery in hospital after thugs set him alight as snoozed in the sunshine.

The 37-year-old was attacked in Kirkdale, Liverpool, on Thursday evening.

Witnesses saw three or four youths running from the area, a Merseyside Police spokesman said, before spotting the victim ablaze.

The attackers - thought to be between 14 and 16 years old - fled across Commercial Road in the direction of St Agnes Road.

The victim was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital suffering from burns to his back. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Crime scene investigators are carrying out forensic examinations and house-to-house inquiries are under way.

Detective chief inspector Tim Keelan said: "This was a particularly callous attack on a man who had fallen asleep in the summer sunshine.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information regarding the attack to come forward.

"This is a main route in and out of the city and I would appeal to any motorists, or pedestrians, who saw anything to contact us.

"One of the victim's shoes - a brown Kicker-style shoe - is missing and we believe the offenders may have run off with it.

"If anybody finds a shoe fitting this description, or who knows where it is, I would ask them to contact us immediately."

Technically Great Britain isn't a country and it's a bit silly to say a whole "country" isn't great because of crime. Every country has crime and every country has cases like these.

You could equally argue that it must sicken everyone to be human that someone can do such a thing- yet we can all admit that in the course of history far greater and more disgusting crimes have taken place.

Wow no offense but some of you are acting so stupid with this! Crime? England has bad crime? Have you ever been to America? Stop being a pansy. i grew up in a ghetto and saw many different ways of people dying because of murder or crimes, and people being unlawful with mugging people. i've seen so much more and heard so much more harmful things in America. We have one of the biggest crime rates so dont down one country because of some little crimes. when you see one of your best friends get shot then we'll talk. until then grow up. crimes everywhere and its not the ethnicity. besides also no offense, you can be ANYONE and commit a crime. so dont diss one country. so think before you talk.

i agree with you when you say they should be hanged and when someone said "isnt that kinda like saying quit fighting or il hit you?" hes it is but thats what everyone should do justice is based upon the system of an eye for an eye so the punishment should fit the crime but i digress

Dragonator, what you forget is that halfway through we realized that America is too big. It's an unweildly country. Too vast to really do much with that's worthwhile. Which is why we moved back to our nice compact little country.

That, and don't forget that it was the last war in which you guys actually "won", and it was a war in which you were, essentially, fighting yourselves. That's nothing to brag about people. We could all win wars if we only fought our own people. It's when you go out to other countries, like Vietnam that you actually can claim to have won.

And no, WW2 doesn't count, you couldn't have a huge punch up, with another country handing out advice to both people, only to jump in near the end, throw the final punch and claim victory. Nuhuh, doesn't work that way. If you're not in it from day one, you haven't fought in a "war", just been the little weakling kid who throws a small punch near the end and acts big and tough.

Technically speaking, thus far, war wise, we're still the undisputed world war champions of the world.

That's why you guys came to us for help on the war in Iraq. You come to the experts.

Incidentally, while I'm at it, I was all for the war in Iraq, it was essential practice in case one turns up that we actually have to fight. Got to keep match fit after all.

As for how good we are, we had a war with France that lasted a hundred years for the sole fact that we were enjoying winning it so much we spun it out for the full century. Well if you're doing well you stay at the crease doncha?

Of course, so far the only war America's actually won singlehandedly is when they were fighting themselves... there's nothing to be proud of there guys.

Wanting to kill people who break the law is silly. I may be wrong but I think the last person who was hung in England, afterwards was found to be innocent. A good reason not to do it.
