Way back before the Internet, there were Bulletin Board Systems, which basically hosted forums similar to this, usually with areas to share and download files. You had to dial into the BBS to access it, and its number of concurrent users matched with the number of modems the owner purchased and hooked up.

Then the Internet came along, and they all fairly much disappeared over a period of about a year...

I have a fetish for old computer stuff. I actuially have been thinking of launching a gopher version of getDare after the next refurbishment. The cool factor for me would be off the map. Not sure if I would include the forums. I have little desire to build too many applications off the vBulletin database.
