Not trying to be picky. I do believe this is a heck of a story.

Anonomousbob hit this on the head - this was a rule that Ed made to try and even the game out... as far as the boys were concerned, they were as good as slaves anyway, so Ed had nothing to loose, but I think he already had the trap set when he suggested it.
