question about age subject

Im getting ready to wright my first story and need to know what the rules are on how young a subject can be especially if the subject is thinking back to when she was younger in the story?

Something from personal experience writing stories on here, I don't think there is a rule about it, but just be aware that some people will be put off a story if sexual things happen to someone outside of age of consent.

I've been tripped up here a couple of times as in the UK age of consent is 16, but in some other places it is 18 or 21 and I've had people message me concerned by the content because I haven't specified where it is taking place so are upset that someone who is 16 or 17 is involved.

If you flashback to a traumatic scene in their past (pre-age of consent, e.g. a rape or something similar when they are a chid) just put trigger warnings. Ideally trigger warnings should come anyway with rape scenes.

Legally I believe even works of fiction can be considered pornography so under 18 would technically be illegal. I'm not sure if writing a flashback as part of character development would get you in a lot of trouble but its probably a bit of grey area. Obviously its going to depend how young and how graphic as well. Personally I'd keep things 18 or non specific and not make the age a focus at all.

Personally, I have a hard time believing that. I mean, otherwise the bazillion harry potter fanfictions written by 14 year olds are all illegal and criminal, which seems pretty silly to me.

Plenty of literature involve minors dealing with their sexuality, which isn't something that spontaneously manifests the moment they turn 18, as much as adults want to believe that's how things work. Even non-fiction like the Diary of Anne Frank contains content about sexuality. And it's even more abundant in fiction from Twilight to The Fault in Our Stars. It's literature about fictional characters, and sexuality exists for these characters. The way I see it, existing fiction already commonly has minors and sexuality being intertwined, and if it doesn't hurt anyone, I don't see why it needs to be so taboo.
