I think it really, really depends on the couple and their dynamics. Also, i think too many couples rush to sex because that's what other couples are doing, instead of letting it be a natural progression of trust and comfort in the relationship. I think it's best that you don't force it, and if you aren't sure if its the right time or you're nervous, you should probably wait.

Also, some people 'put out' by which i mean they enjoy having sex recreationally, instead of as a feature of a committed relationship, and that's fine, and obviously sex will happen a lot sooner, but if you're not one of those people you shouldn't compare yourself to them and think you're being really prudish. Especially when you are younger, ie in high school, i think waiting at least 6 months is a good rule of thumb.
