Someone help. How does multiquoting work?

How does multiquoting work? I can't figure it out. When I press on the Multiquote button the orange part of the button flashes continually and the plus sign changes to a minus sign. What do I do next? I tried selecting some text both before clicking on the button and after but nothing happens.

Click multi-quote.

Go to the next person you want to quote and click-

Multi-quote again if you're going to be quoting someone else to.
or
Quote if they're the final person you're quoting.

Oh right. I thought it was so you could separately quote different parts of one post in your reply to it. Never mind then. Thanks.
