"Thanks" Buttons

How does the "thanks" button for threads work?

I'm just curious because I like to thank threads I really like, but sometimes the option isn't there, and I wondered why that is?

I know I've thanked some threads today, but right now, I can't seem to find a thanks button on any thread at all! I can see other people have thanked on them, but I can't.

Is it something to do with only thanking X amount of threads a day? Or is there a time limit on threads that you can't thank them after, say, a week/month/year etc.? Or something else entirely?

I'm just confused

Ahh yeah I've read that, thanks

It's just it doesn't seem to answer my question about why the thanks button sometimes disappears/isn't there?
