I quoted the word "sniffing" to clarify that it is used only metaphorically (it's a literal translation of an italian figure of speech, does it sound bad in english?).

I have actually been toying with the idea of "accidentally" showing my handcuffs to her... maybe call her to my room and leave them in sight... and see her reaction... that could possibly be a good way to test the waters for potential next steps...

I kinda like that one, if only it weren't so creepy in English . If you're interested I think a good English equivalent would be "testing the waters", e.g. "...the two of you are 'testing the waters with' each other, slowly (and, to some extent, shyly) exploring the kinks of the other...".
