I understand that, but someone who is not a songwriter, such as anyone who puts random words together that rhyme, and calls it a song is simply not a songwriter.
"A songwriter is someone who writes the lyrics, as well as the musical composition or melody to songs. One who writes only lyrics is a lyricist, while one who writes only music is a composer."
soo in my opinion some one like lil wayne is a songwriter but you just dont think hes a good one because he puts random words together that rhyme. to some people he is a good songwriter. oh and i did give you a good song writer ... Johnathon coulton

If there is a techno song that is completely instrumental, (typically digital) It does not even apply to the thread
yes that is true but techno can still be in this thread people like basshunter or cascada have good music and they still have lyrics

to say I am hating on a type of music is bull shit
i do agree there but i tend to like music that relates to me more than anything else and when i said i hate a lot of the old music i meant bands like led zeppelin and stuff not for the music it self but the singers (i don't know i just hate there voices)

In order to be a great songwriter, it typically requires hit albums and long term popularity.
i don't agree TO BE A GREAT SONGWRITER you have to write great songs not be popular. (again if this makes no sense im gonna blame im tired and its 3 am)

Lyrical wise, i'm going to say Marilyn Manson, being a fan of him and listening to his music he knows how to provoke such emotion in his lyrics.

Musically, my favorite of all time is Randy Rhoads and i'm afraid that'll never change

Just off the top of my head I was going to say John Lennon.

Can't argue with Bob Dylan. He wrote a lot of songs for other people too.

Educated Answers only please.

I would have to go with, Bob Dylan, then Lennon/McCartney.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Freddie Mercury, Bruce Dickinson.

Everyone else is dirt compared to them. None of the new breed can stand up to the greatness. It's hard to believe kids are into such twaddle like Nick Jonas and Miley Cyrus.

And Please cut the crap trolling of the likes of Green Day, they're actually impressive, singing about todays climate, both in a political and social sense.

Green Day are good, nuff said, and this is coming from someone who's obsessed with The Beatles. My Chemical Romance are good, Nickelback are good etc..

3OH!3 and Jonas Brothers?....well....i draw the line there.

Just stop trolling other peoples tastes, get a life and listen to your own.

Default I'm not trying to be an ass

but, I have never seen a DJ awarded a grammy, except grand master flash.

I understand its a personal choice, who, but I should have made it more clear,
Here is a list, of songwriters, that are considered "great", by experts.

Traffic wtf

honestly what do you have against rap? i dont mean songs about bitches, murdering and money like lil wayne and people but like real rap with meaningful value. listen to alotta kanye west and kid cudi stuff and you understand what rap is really about. just give it a try. and for all you hypocrites you can hear the lyrics in rap and it isnt abunch of words put together that rhyme it has a beat and a meaningful value which is considered REAL music and GOOD music. the rap songs have just as good as lyrics as like john elton and the beatles and green day just sung differently. Listen, i like green day and almost all the other artists mentioned in this thread, but the kinda rap i listen to is just a lot better lyrics and a lot better flow and meaning. listen, thats not my opinion and im not trying to offend anying. i dont wanna start a big argument so please dont take this as an insult.

Default Rap

I have nothing against rap, I just feel that most of the rap now, is just a bunch of words, with a catchy chorus. Kid Cudi, I would have to say is number one right now on the rap spectrum, as a lyrical generous. But, i feel that most of lil Waynes music, is not deep at all. When I listen to one of his songs, I almost always end it scratching my head asking myself wtf was that song about? But once again, I would have to say, the older rap music, was alot more sentimental and deeper. Tupac and NWA, to name a couple. But once again, I bring up the factor of long term success. Kid Cudi, has had one album, and 2 more to come. That simply can not compare to the 29 hit albums the Beatles put out, as well as the 54 albums Bob Dylan has released. All I am trying to say, its hard to backup someone, who has good lyrics, but only a couple of albums, when the whole world of music is showing you otherwise.

best? Gonna have to say Dylan.

now then, what might make this more interesting/less "OMG ARTIST XYZ SUXX" is if people list a favorite in addition to a best.

The difference? Favorite would be one who is good and who you especially like; it doesn't necessitate claiming that they are the best ever.

as for my favorite? Billy Corgan.
