I'm going to say right away... yup, he's doing what you think he's doing.

But consider this... this kid is growing up in the middle of Germany in the 1890's. That's when the originaly play was published. And in it, there is an entire scene with this kid (Hanschen) masturbating onstage. (By the way, it's simulated- they would not be able to, or want to actually show that.)

This takes place in the show's fifth musaical number "My Junk" which talks about their crushes. It's probably the lightest song of the play, considerign the other topics include teen sex, abortion, death, suicide, sexual misinformation, depression, child abuse, incest, forced prostitution, etc...

It's not a raunchy play. It's not a depressing play. It's a fabulous, groundbreaking, play that has the reality and boldness that accentuates the beauty and optimism of the play's message.
