Having recently taken some time away from getDare, I've been giving some thought to what draws me back to getDare time and again over the years. I've decided it's authenticity.
I've watched plenty of porn, of nearly every kink, but regardless of the type of porn, I'm always drawn to amateur footage of people authentically displaying their true erotic selves. But porn is uni-directional: producers and consumers. I've read plenty of erotic stories, also across nearly every kink, but again this is uni-directional. I've been to cam sites, where interaction is the commodity they are selling and authenticity is just a fantasy, packaged and sold to consumers.
It's only in obscure little corners of the internet like getDare that I've found the authenticity that grabs me. While there are many things about getDare that can be frustrating, and that can lead me to be cynical, this post is not about these. It's about the positive draw for me, the value of getDare to me. It's about the authenticity that exists here framed the context of playful fun rather than overbearing seriousness.
Yes, there are many people here pretending to be something or someone they are not, or perhaps something they wish they could be, or perhaps just escaping who they actually are for some reason. I try not to judge people who come to getDare to do this—it's not my place to tell others how this site is to be used. I think the getDare admins have been very wise in deciding not to police identity and truthfulness.
But there are also people here who are here being brutally honest with themselves and others. Truth or Dare: honesty balances daring, and both can be scary. These people bring authenticity to the site and to their interactions with others here. Authentic admissions of things that others may not understand, that are often ridiculed or treated as defects. Authentic interactions in ways that are not "acceptable" or "proper" or that conform to some fixed worldview of rightness. These are the people that bring me back here.
I enjoy playful interaction with people who are being honest about their kinks. I enjoy interesting discussions with people as we explore our kinks, and reading the discussions of others. I enjoy watching and sometimes participating in the genuine—authentic—emotional journeys that kink play permits.
So thank you to all those I've interacted with that bring this authenticity here to getDare. And thank you to the multitudes of people here bringing this authenticity that I may have never interacted with, but who have posted and contributed, and helped form part of this community.
