Self-esteem, though a much abused phrase, is basic to love and well bring. Unless we feel worthy of love, we are not likely to receive it. The judgments we pass on ourselves are reflected in out every decision, our every act. If we care little for ourselves, we are likely to end up as someone's doormat.
Self-respect is the companion of self-worth. We can view the world as populated by individuals wiser, better looking, more interesting and desirable than we, or we can decide that we are just as valuable as they, only different. Instead of constantly comparing, we can focus on our unique strengths and use our energy to uncover dormant skills and new talents.
It is well to challenge ourselves with dreams of what we would like to be, but it is wiser to stay within the realistic realm of who we are. What wonders we do for our self-esteem when we accept who we are and look to our strengths rather than our weaknesses. We we accept ourselves, body mind and spirit, we will stop belittling ourselves and concentrate on the development of our potential for being the perfect us. At this point, we start to know what it means to be worthy of love.

You said some great things in here. So many people are too hard on themselves. They dismiss the good qualities that are a large part of themselves and focus their sense of value on qualities that they lack. Its always good to look for ways to improve ones self, but as you say, its also important to recognize and respect the person that we are and the skills that we already possess.
