I think it works fine as is. The mods need to be able to be invisible when they want some peace and to just enjoy the site without modding.
You can usually spot an invisible mod - if you know who they are - if you are observant. I had an example of this the other day where I saw something that I thought needed deleting quickly. There were no mods visible so I reported it but also had noticed that one of the mods had just posted so I PMd him as well to make sure he was aware quickly. I'm not 100% sure if the PM was necessary but I have taken the view that if in doubt just report it - then the experts can decide what to do with it.

I really like your first screen shot idea. It is far better than the red underline we have currently. It catches your eye a lot faster and easier than the red line. And no problem if a mod is invisible cause it will affect the online list the same way as the current method (red underline).
