going over seas

Hey just writing this to get advice from any1 who has ever done this before, im currently planning to go overseas XD but going to volnteer in an orphanage either in africa or asia, atm im not quite sure what to expect most likely i will be helping the salvation army orphanages. Do you recon i should bring my DSLR camera, i know i could take some amazing photographys but idk about how safe it would be and do you think the kids will just want to play with it?

Has anyone ever done this before?
