Yeah, two taps is normal over in the UK. A hold over from regulations on housebuilding that allowed hot water tanks to be open in older houses. So the hot water wasn't safe to drink (well, not necessarily) in the bathroom. Hence split taps. Usually you can change the temperature on boilers (especially older ones) so that the water doesn't raise above 40 degrees C, not sure what that is in old Fahrenheit, so you don't burn your hands.
Mixer taps, to her experience, tend to be neither hot enough to make proper washing/shaving water nor cold enough for a rinse in hot weather. They also suck when trying to do her teeth. Ugh. They may be alright for some, but not her. She does believe showers are showers though, and have nothing to do with separate taps. However, her own shower hose attaches to the taps. Or, it would, if it weren't broken. Check out youtube, there are a couple of videos that explain it (Tom Scott springs to mind, but also Anglophenia).

The showers at the gym have just one control tap the sinks have mixer taps.
