Exclamation What are your tips for saving money?

I am an avid saver and save at least 100 euro per month and manage to do this in a variety of ways. For example, nearby my college 4 cans of 7up is 50c cheaper than in my town(poorer town, more "pound shops") and I don't buy new games, I wait till they are out a while and in CEX for €10-€20. I also use a budget and bring the exact same amount on holiday every year. However I believe you can always learn more and was wondering what does everyone here do to save their money? Maybe we can all learn something from this.

Loose change.

I just take any change I get throughout the day and toss it in a jar, save it up throughout the year, and at the end of the year I'll have anywhere between 90-200 bucks

In the country where I am from it's very common in supermarkets that besides showing the total price that they also show the price per liter or kg. This makes it very easy for comparing what's cheaper and what's not. I suggest that you use your phone or something to do this conversions if shops don't show this stuff where you live.

Also I recommend that you stop buying cans and buy 1.5 or 2(.5) liter bottles in general they are much cheaper, also get a house brand (if it tastes good) instead of 7up or sprite should help out a lot. ost of the time bigger quantities are cheaper then smaller but it's only useful as long as it doesn't generate you any waist or doesn't spoil (soda, dry pasta, canned stuff, etc). Also if you think big bottles are annoying to carry get yourself a bidon (drinking bottle) and fill it up by using a big bottle.

When in stores that have the 'take a penny, leave a penny' dish, always just take the change and never leave any

Go wading in fountains, people love just tossing change in there

Sit on a corner and pretend to be homeless/ be a street performer like a mime

Disclaimer: all of these are said in joke and not to be taken seriously!

This one is serious, try the 52 week money challenge: put away 1 dollar each week and increase by one each week, so on week 52, your putting away 52 dollars. At the end you'll have over a grand!

Just google it for more info

A good tip is to just buy what you need, and not to buy stuff you will not use or don't really need

Keep your debt to an absolute minimum. I own a modest 800 sq older 2 bedroom bungalow vehicle etc but been debt free for about 6 years now. If there is anything I want I will save up for it first. You'd be amazed the money you will save not paying interest.

Use the program: You Need A Budget.

This program costs $60 or €50, unless you are a student. If you are a student, then it's completely free to use. So if you are a student and seek a program that helps you save money easier, then go to

  1. Don't buy things you don't need
  2. When it is something you want, ask yourself if you could buy two at the same time - if the answer is no - don't buy it
  3. When it comes to equipment go for quality - that is especially true when regarding tools
  4. Make a budget - sum up your predicted expenses and see how much you can save and how much for extra expenses.
  5. Look for discounted items when making a purchase, but be careful with that - don't be fooled to buy something you don't need just because it's at a discount!
