Non-Fiction: A Tale of Many Bets

This is my first non-fiction story, so bear with me.

Also, I will be telling this story in the first person. Names have been changed for privacy reasons.

I suppose I should describe myself at the time. I was 12 years old, I had dark brown hair, and I was about four and a half feet tall. I was about to enter the sixth grade at a junior hgh school outside a small US town.

Enough information for now. On to the story:

Chapter One

"Bye Mom!" I shouted as I ran out the door to catch the bus. She may have replied, but if she did, I didn't hear her.

I run to the big yellow school bus waiting at the foot of my driveway. I have ridden on a bus to school ever since I first started. See, my house is the furthest one out, so it's natural to ride the bus. Mom has to be at work soon so she doesn't have any time to drive me.

Since we live the furthest out, I'm usually the first one picked up, so I'm surprised when I get on the bus and see a boy around my age sitting in the far back seat. Being the nice guy that I am, I sit down next to him and introduce myself.

"Kyle, huh?" he says. "My name's Damien. My family and I just moved here from Maine."

"Maine, really?" I ask. "What's it like there?"

As he fills me in about what Maine is like, I take a closer look at him. He has short black hair, and seems to be a little shorter than me. I can't tell yet since we're both still sitting.

"So what about you?" he asks. "What's it like here?"

"Eh, nothing special," I say. Then, out of curiousity, I ask, "Say, how far from me do you live?"

"I lve right next door to you," he says.

"Really," I reply. "Well, that's pretty cool. Maybe we can hang out sometime."

"We should," he agreed.

Chapter Two

Nothing really eventful happened until we arrived at school.

The bus driver stood up and said, "Okay, to make things easy on all of us, where you are sitting now, that is where you sit for the rest of the year."

I looked around and saw that there was no one sitting near Damien and myself, which would mean that we would not be bothered at all. I had no problem sitting next to Damien, and I was pretty sure he had no problem too.

To make an uninteresting part seem less boring, Damien and I went to our classes (and we shared a few I might add). It wasn't until we were back on the bus that anything happened.

"Hey, Kyle, are you busy this afternoon?" Damien asked.

"No, I'm not. Why?"

"Well, I was wondering if you wanted to cme over to my house for a while," he said.

I thought about it for a moment. There was nobody at my home at the moment, so I would be alone for a few hours. I smiled and said that I would come over right after I was dropped off.

A few minutes later, I got off the bus. I left my backpack and a brief note to my mother explaining where I was in case she got home before me. Then I got on my bike and rode over to Damien's house.

He was standing in the driveway waiting for me when I pedaled up. "are your parents home?" I asked him.

"No, they're not. They get out much later. I also have a younger brother, but he won't be home for a while either." he replied.

I said okay then asked what we were going to do.

"Do you know how to play poker?" he asked.

I told him I did.

"Are you any good?"

"Yes."

"Good. In that case, mybe we should make a bet on a game of poker," he said.

Well, wait no longer.

Chapter 3

"What kind of bet?" I asked. "You don't mean money, do you?"

"No, not money," Damien said. "I was thinking maybe the loser would have to do anything the winner wants for the rest of the day."

I thought about this. If I won, I could make Damien do a few chores that I was too lazy to do. I wouldn't be too mean to the guy. After all, what could he do to me, right?

"I accept," I said. "So what are the rules?"

"We're going to play five card stud, and whoever wins best three out of five wins."

"So where are we going to play?" I asked, noticing that we were still outside.

"In my room," he said. He unlocked the front door and led me inside his house. We went straight to his room, which was furnished with a bunk bed, a desk with a swivel chair, a dresser, and a small table with three chairs. Damien pulled a deck of playing cards out of the desk and sat down at the table. I sat down too and he started shuffling the cards.

"So what will your parents say if they come home and I'm still here?" I asked.

"They won't care," Damien replied. "In fact, they would be glad that I've made a friend." He started dealing out the cards.

I looked at my hand. It wasn't too bad. I had a five, a seven, two tens, and a queen. I laid down my cards and said, "I have a pair of tens."

Damien laid down his and I saw three eights, a two, and an ace.

"Looks like I win the first round," he said.

He gathered up the cards, shuffled them, and dealt them out. I looked at my new hand.

Damn...

Chapter Four

I have had some bad hands in my time, but boy, this was the worst.

I had a two, a three, a five, a seven, and a ten. It was a shame they weren't all the sane suit, otherwise I could win this round. I sighed and started to show my cards, but before I could, Damien threw his down and said, "I fold."

"What? Why?" I asked.

"My hand sucks," he said.

"So did mine," I replied, and showed him my cards. His eyebrows shot up and he exclaimed, "I could have won that round!"

"Why, what'd you have?"

"A pair of twos!" he replied.

"I guess my luck must be changing. Now we're one to one."

He said nothing in reply to my comment, but gathered up his cards and dealt them out again. This time, I had a really good hand. I had three queens, an ace, and a ten. I looked over at Damien, who showed me a pair of aces.

"Good," I said, and Damien began to smile. "But not good enough," I added as I showed him my three queens. I was now winning this. One more win for me, and the game was mine.

Damien dealt out the cards again. I looked at mine and I saw a five, a six, two jacks, and an ace. Decent hand, but I was pretty sure Damien had a better one. To prove my point, he showed me his cards and he had two fives and two tens.

"I guess you win this one," I sai, as I showed him my pair of jacks.

"We're tied," he said, as he dealt out the cards for the last time.

I looked at my hand. I had a full house with two kings and three fives. I knew I had this. There was no way Damien could beat this hand.

I showed my cards. Damien looked pretty surprised. Then he showed me all of his. All I saw was a two, a three, a four, a five, and a six. Also, all his cards were the same suit.

He had gotten a straight flush, no small feat in the poker world. I've only seen two other people accomplish this since I started playing, and I was one of them.

"Looks like I win," Damien said, as I wondered what I was in for...

You must think that's a hell of a long time. Personally, I think that's a hell of a bird. 14 years on GetDare!
