Why only thank a limited amount of times?

Why is the 'thanks' button only available a limited number of times?
I believe you can only use it X times a day, is that correct?

In many cases, I like to acknowledge the fact that I've read someone's response without needing to reply and this is what I like to use the button for. But I am limited in its use.

What is the reasoning behind this?

It's limited to three (3) times a day, I believe. The Thanks! button is a special button and it needs to stay special. Else people will spam the button, letting the button lose it's specialty 'being special'.

Another thing would be to create a second account and spam all the posts of your original account with Thanks!. This needs to be avoided.

I can only assume that when this feature was added it was the default amount of available "Thanks" we could use and that Depp preferred leaving it at that.

Before "Thanks" we had a reputation feature and that went ugly as people abused it to either "rep" each other's posts over such things as Lounge games and others gave negative rep to people just because they disliked them, etc. How the rep system was abused probably served us as a reminder of how such things can be misused sometimes.

Personally I "thank" posts that I find particularly original, interesting or helpfully informative only.

Post thanks can be given to 4 threads every 24hours

Posters must have posted 3 post to be abke to post a thanks

Earlier this year I allowed users to thank posts in a thread as well as the actual thread. Eg thanks submischievous post above
