The Internet Conspiracy That You Might Not Know About (Note: Not crazy person stuff)

Usually, this is something that I might put in a blog. But this is a story that I needed more exposure to it.

Some of on facebook might follow the NBA Meme's page. Until last night, it was redirecting you to a stupid page called Sports Comedy Network (which has since been deleted). That is because Sarah Phillips, a person who might not actually exist, along with the help of two mysterious men, scammed a 19 year old kid out of his website.

Yesterday, Deadspin, a sports website that usually makes penis jokes and posts penis pictures, ran an article about Ms. Phillips called, "Is an ESPN Columnist Scamming People on the Internet." The story focuses on this girl, Sarah Phillips, an her correspondence with different people on the internet. One on the sports betting website, covers.com and then the NBA meme's page. The NBA meme account has since been recovered and the college kid can go back to making a few hundred bucks a month of the page.

To end the story there would just make it an odd little coincidence. No, the story goes far beyond that. Some people on here use twitter and not facebook. You might have seen, whether you follow him or from friends retweeting it, a Willy Wonka account called @OhWonka. Just a stupid little Condescending Willy Wonka account, kind of like the meme's everyone sees. Well, it turns out Sarah Phillips also has some hand it this as well. While Deadspin first reported it, the sports media watchdog group, Awful Announcing, posted an article early this morning about @OhWonka's dealings with Sarah Phillips and her correspondences and the recent takeover that left the twitter feed with a lot less funny statements, a few creepy messages about Sarah Phillips, and a lot more advertisements that can be found here. @OhWonka has since been given back to the original owners of the twitter handle.

Deadspin has stated that they plan on coming out with another Sarah Phillips story sometime today, and I am sure they will be coming out for the foreseeable future. It really is an interesting story just because of how common these parody accounts are and how popular they are. I would suggest anyone who follows these parody accounts (particularly NBA Meme's and @OhWonka) to really read these articles.
