Hurricane Names
I could Google this but I thought I'd ask you guys first. Just heard of a hurricane/weather warning (firstly on the MBP sticky) and I was curious as to how hurricanes get named?

They start with an A name, then a B name, and so on, starting over at the beginning of the year. One year all the names are male. The next, all the names are female. They just choose random names, as far as I know, but I think it's... 12 years before they can use the same name again? Or something like that.

Names are assigned in advance for six-year cycles. The names are suggested by countries that lie in the path of hurricanes. The names must be approved by the Region 4 Hurricane Committee of the World Meteorological Organization, which is made up of representatives of countries affected by hurricanes. Once a tropical storm develops, staff members at the National Hurricane Center near Miami, Florida, automatically assign it the next name on the list.
googled it and this is what i founds

I found names to be somewhat odd at first but then I suppose you can't differentiate between "the really windy one", "the one with lots of rain" and "that one the other year".

Haha. Here in Florida people talk about the storms that happened up to 10 or 15 years ago by name and if you aren't familiar with the lingo, you'd think they were talking about a super abusive boyfriend/girlfriend or something. :P

They use 6 different name lists and they rotate it every 6 years. So 2011 names are names used from 2005 EXCEPT the ones that got retired.
Names that get retired is shockingly not up to the NHC (National Hurricane Center) rather, it is up to the WMO, (World Meteorological Organization). Names that get retired are never used again. They get replaced with a new name. Of course, by gosh no one knows why, they decided to replace Katrina with an even more scary name... Katia. LOL. In the north ATL (Atlantic) Basin they don't use letters Q, U, X, Y and Z. And if we use up all the letters which we did in 2005 and might also do it in 2011 since its been really active so far, we go into the Greek Alphabet. 2005 was a hyper active year, 27 named storms and one unnamed storm. How the NHC missed that one is way beyond me. Eastern Pacific is pretty much the same except they use more letters than the north Atlantic basin. And to add, they alternate male, female. If female is first, it would go female, male. This all was from my own knowledge
