Schoolchildren are being urged to try oral sex in a bid to cut teen pregnancies. British students are getting advice from the country's chief medical officer. Sir Liam Donaldson says 15 and 16-year-olds should limit their sexual contact to touching, fondling, and pleasuring each other.

"Sexual behaviour is often unsafe in adolescence," he said. "Teenagers have more sexual partners and may use condoms inconsistently or unsuccessfully." He writes in a teen health pamphlet: "Think of all the lovely sexy things you can do wthout actually dong it. And i you do do it, be safe and use a condom."

His advice to "stop short" comes after more than 3000 English and Welsh girls under 16 had babies and 4700 had abortions in 2006. Doctors say this "culture of promiscuity" has sent the rate of sexually transmitted infections among young people soaring to record levels. Almost 400,000 people in Britain were diagnosed with diseases such as chlamydia to gonorrhoea last year, the highest number since records began three decades ago. About half the infections were in under-25s.

The UK Health Protection Agency, which collected the figures, said promiscuity was partly to blame, with casual sex increasingly becoming "part of the territory" for young people.
