Have the first roll be on a 2d6 or 3d6 as the number of days. That will average of either 7 or 10.5 days. You might also include that the two or three low rolls require a start over with the same master at the end of the period. The top two require a full start over with possibly a new master at the end of the period. In any case if both agree a new time roll can be made at the end of each period. Perhaps with the risk of loosing the partnership to another master.

You might also reagange the first 21 activities from easy to hard, renumber them 4 through 39. Then have the daily roll be on a 4d6. Playing hard would roll a 5d6, harder a 6d6, and insane 7d6 (with over 36 counting as 36, or adding a few more).

Variations...
The players might agree one may request a day off at the cost of adding 1 on rolls for the following N days. If near the end 2 or more may need to be added to exhaust the N extra.

Another option could be that a roller feels lucky and can add an amount (or a die) before rolling for the day. Then in the future he later can subtract the extra (before rolling).

If the roll is the same as a roll of the previous N days, he gets the day off.
