Default The Effect of Long Term Exposure to Cool Temperatures on Males

I'm not running this, mostly because it runs itself. If you want to sign up, roll a die. 1-2 is Test Group 1, 3-4 is Test Group 2, and 5-6 is Test Group 3. Then just follow the rules. It's actually based off a real experiment I read about where two group of guys, one clothed, one naked, were exposed to cool temperature for eight hours a day for a month. I think it'd be really cool to try to redo the experiment. I'm sure there are some undergrads who wouldn't mind giving up their winter break to participate.

Welcome everyone and thank you for volunteering as test subjects for this experiment. As you were told when you signed up, this experiment is to gather data on the effects of long-term exposure to cool temperatures on males, specifically of any increase in tolerance to cool temperatures. In this house, the temperature will always be below fifty degrees Fahrenheit. Over the next four weeks you will spend eight continuous waking hours each day here.

Inside your packet is a schedule when the house will be open. An assistant will be here from 6:00 am to midnight. If you need different hours on a particular day, please let one of the assistants know and we will arrange to have someone here. As a reminder, you cannot split your eight-hour shift into multiple parts; it must be continuous. If you cannot make your shift or need to leave before the eight hours are up, we may drop you from the experiment and if so, you will receive no remuneration. The house will not be open Christmas Day. Enjoy your time with your family.

We have three TVs set up for your entertainment. Feel free to bring PlayStations, Xboxes, Switches, laptops, books, games, etc. Any laptops should not rest on you as that is a source of warmth. If you wish to listen to music, please use in ear headphones as to not disturb others and to not insulate the ears.

A typical day here will start with your arrival, upon which you will change into your appropriate clothing based on which group you have been assigned to. Next, you will take a brief medical exam: blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, and a breathalyzer. If your blood alcohol content is above a .03, you will not be allowed to start your shift. After the medical exam, you are free to do what you please. There are bedrooms if you want some privacy, the common rooms for entertainment, the kitchen has some snacks. About four hours into your shift you will have another medical exam and a short questionnaire, and then a final exam and questionnaire before you leave. Just as a note, the results of the medical exams will be attached to your test subject ID number and not to your name to preserve privacy. Lastly, you need to engage in one hour of physical activity once per shift. A trainer will be here in the early evenings to lead a group workout, but you are free to exercise on your own. There is some weight equipment on the back patio for you to use.

This won’t happen every day, but an assistant may ask you to perform a simple task during your shift. This could be as simple as having you stay in front of a fan, take a cold shower or bath, spend time outside, engage in physical activity, or talk about how you’re feeling at the moment. This is all to test how you’re dealing with the cool temperatures, and to determine your reactions to short term exposure to colder temperatures.

Everybody good? Great! Now, let’s go over a couple of ground rules for the experiment:
- Clean up after yourself! We have hired a cleaning service to come in once a week for the bathrooms, but please keep the common areas, kitchen, and bedrooms clean.
- You can eat what you want, unless it’s on the prohibited list, but no hot or warm food. Cold food only.
- No alcohol consumption during your eight-hour shift.
- No drugs except those prescribed by a doctor and approved by us. If your drug is not approved, we may have to drop you from the experiment. Today, we will be taking urine samples to do a drug test. Every day, one person from each of the three test groups will be selected at random for a drug test. You will all be tested again at the conclusion of the experiment. If you test positive for any drug, you will be dropped from the experiment and you will not receive any remuneration.
- Check the temperature of a room when you enter it. There are thermometers in every room. If you see one with a reading at or above fifty degrees, please notify an assistant immediately.
- Cold showers only. No hot. Same thing with drinking and washing, cold water only.
- Blankets and towels are prohibited except to quickly dry off.
- If the outside temperature is below fifty degrees, you are free to go outside. Feel free to roam around the neighborhood. There’s a park across the street which I find is a great place to take a walk or go for a run. Test Group 3, I suggest you limit yourself to the fenced backyard, at least during the day.
- Test Groups 2 and 3 are allowed to wear shoes and socks when exercising outside; otherwise, please only wear flip flops or sandals when outside.
- No drugs, alcohol or caffeinated beverages inside the house.
- No sleeping
- No sexually explicit material is allowed inside the house. If we catch you watching porn, we will confiscate your device until the end of your shift, and you will not be allowed to have it again inside the house.
- Be conscientious of your fellow test subjects and the assistants.
- If you are uncomfortable with anything, please talk to an assistant or me. You all have my cellphone number if I am not here.
- DO NOT TOUCH THE THERMOSTATS!!!
- My word is final.

Finally, let’s talk about the test groups. You’ve been randomly assigned to one of three test groups. You will find your assignment in your packet. Test Group 1 is the control group. You are allowed to wear whatever clothing you are comfortable with. At minimum that will include socks, underwear, long pants, and a tee shirt. Test Group 2 is allowed to wear only warm weather clothing. That means underwear, shorts, and a tee shirt only. Test Group 3 will remain naked for their entire eight-hour shift.

At the end of two weeks, Test Group 1’s attire will change to warm weather clothing and Test Group 2 will be naked. At the end of the third week, Test Group 1 will also be naked. Test Group 3, for the final two weeks you will be assigned tasks to be performed multiple times per shift to test how that effects your tolerance for cold temperatures. The experiment will conclude at the end of the fourth week. You will be paid after the results of your final drug test are returned. If you are dropped from the experiment at any time or fail a drug test, you forfeit any remuneration.

Any questions? Good. Thank you again for volunteering. See you all Saturday!
