ROXIE.
This comes from the famed musical, Chicago- my favorite old-fashioned musical. In it, Roxie cheats on her husband because a man named Fred Casely told her that he had conections. She wants to get into vaudeville (it takes place in the Roaring Twenties) and thinks he can get her in. When it is revealed that he actually has no connections whatsoever, he shoots him. She convinces her husband Amos, that he was trying to burglarize her, and that he should claim that he saw the "burglar" breaking in.He does so, but eventually he figures out that this was someone Roxies was having sex with.
In jail, she's almost certainly going to be hanged- but Amos throws together all the money he can to get Roxie the best lawyer possible, Billy Flynn. He's never lost a case and is incredibly manipulative. While in jail, she becomes incredibly famous.
Eventually, she wins the case and is set free. And then, just as they're about to take her picture, another murder is committed outside the courthouse, and the media's attention changes.
In the end, Roxie teamsup with another prisoner, Velma, and they get an act.
It's extremely cynical, but brilliant.
