I still say that the FPS genre has never improved on Doom for simplicity and just pure fun.
And no, not Doom 3. But Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom.
No hunting pixels for some git in a building that you can only see with a zoom that flies all over the place trying to search for the guy and so you die early, no trying to keep up with people, no messing about with looking up and down.
Just nice and simple turning, strafing, and firing in well designed and built levels that required not just skillful moving, but some logical thinking to complete the game (as opposed to just blasting everything in sight).
Also still hard as hell thanks to ridiculously tough enemies (meeting the Cyberdemon for the first time anyone?) and occasionally just being swarmed with enemies (the mass of pinkies you get on one level that's just like a sea of them that makes you just shit your pants instantly and pull out the BFG fast) keeps you on your toes, but without having to search for the enemy attacking you.
