(part 29)

“So here are the rules you need to know,” Karen said once we all had our collars and wristbands. “There are a total of 11 leveks. Each level will take one day to complete, and will have requirements you will need to fulfill before you will be allowed to pass to the next level.”

She went on, “Most days, breakfast will be available at 7 AM, with the day’s level starting at 8. The game will continue until 9 PM, when it will be determined who advances, and then dinner will be available.”

“No lunch?” asked Jason.

“Nope,” said Karen. But breakfast and dinner will provide you with enough calories and nutrients to get through the day. Some of you may wind up losing a little weight.

“There will be toilets and drinking fountains at the entrance to each level. Since the toilet area is out of the playing area, you will be limited to 5 minutes per use. This will be strictly enforced.

“The wristbands will be used for scoring. Part of your tasks each day will be to gather ‘souls’, represented by spots of light.” On cue, a circle of light appeared on the wall behind her. “To collect a soul, you need to wave your wristband within 3 inches of the light. Angel, come on up here and try it.”

Angel approached the wall, and lifted her arm to pass her wristband over the spot. But just as her arm got there, the spot moved. Angel cried out “Hey!” and jumped for where the spot had moved to. She was rewarded with a soft chime issued from her wristband.
