Clamps vs Clothes pins and types of each

I've seen quite a few dares involving clamps, usually nipple clamps, but don't have any myself. I've tried substituting plastic clothespins since that is what I do have to mixed results. They don't seem to stay on very well, and since they have very clear ridges rather than flat surfaces the pressure isn't very well distributed. Does anyone know how big a difference switching from plastic to wooden or just getting actual BDSM clamps makes?
