Kik messenger to close

I figured this would be a topic important to many users. (Not a getdare website issue..) but will affect the majority of its user base.

Been a lot of conflicting reports about wheather that is true or not. Hard to know what to believe. Be very sad if it does close, mainly for the groups I'm in.

Other apps are available, skype being one, I used to use Line messenger, (but not many used on here) but a way better app, that works pc, iOS and Android. Encrypted etc..

I wish they would have just sold the app. Kik shutting down will probably negatively effect this site for awhile. I hope we all come to an agreement on a replacement messaging platform to use. This just really sucks.

Its tricky to know which one to replace kik with - kik was good simply for it anonymity, not requiring your phone number!

so there's line (but need a phone number to work even if it doesn't reveal it)
Telegram, also needs a phone number.

there's Wickr.me, a privacy-oriented one that doesn;t need a phone number.

But then there's signal which is very very privacy and security oriented even though it needs a phone number to get started. Open source and recommend by Snowden (who'd know a thing about private messaging).

I guess the biggest problem is knowing which one the scammers use and avoid it

Big issue with public groups on telegram is that anyone can look in a group (and see all post's) without even joining. Obviously a big issue if posting adult or sensitive content. Also anyone who does join can see anything that was posted in the group before they joined.

You can make private groups that are invite only, so I guess could have a public group to find new people, then invite them to the private group if suitable.

I have used discord several times. It is nice because you just need an email to join and it has video, voice, and text options.

It will certainly take a toll on this site - one only needs to look at the number of thread titles containing "kik" in the messengers sub-forum to see how much we as a community use it.

To that end, is there anything our mods can do to facilitate cleaning up our community after the demise of kik? I still hope it doesn't happen, but if kik does go down, could mods (for example) lock all threads with titles containing the word kik, without having to do it one by one? I worry that people will keep posting in them, clogging up the forums and hiding consensus on a replacement system.

Keeping the more active ones open for a while may be useful for people who get caught by surprise to reconnect and regroup.
