Right now, I'm seeing:

Currently Active Users: 519 (111 members and 408 guests)

That is about 1/24th of the maximum.
If we assume that on average people are online at roughly the same time of day, and given that most users are in North America or Europe, then that adds up. It is early evening (peak time) in Eastern Australia, and there are about 12 times as many North Americans as Aussies/Kiwis; not considering the count of Europeans.

It does show that there is a very large variance in the numbers online throughout the day, which is not surprising I suppose.

Was it reset somehow with a recent upgrade? Because I agree that the most users ever online isn't lining up with the (very low) level of activity lately.

I'm going to guess that it's a bot attack, just two hours ago there was over ten thousand more users on than there are at the time that I'm writing this, that's the only thing that makes sense.

So, a periodic (daily) attack that is escalating (since the count is still rising).
One wonders what secrets the site is holding that has prompted this.

If it is a bot attack the best thing to do if it get's too out of hand could simply be to just put a captcha before people could access the page.

Also if it helps my PC/IP keeps getting captcha'd which seems to also be in line with the issue I reported about a week ago about getting logged out randomly (which might be getting more frequent but I can't tell)

Most of the time it's web crawlers aka spiders. Harmless. I know that these kinds of metrics are often triggered like that.

It's possible that since Google "senses" more demand of this kind of site, it starts to send out more bots this way to have better data.

Botnet is unlikely. Highly unlikely. The numbers are too low and they would use different techniques. Very maybe it's a scriptkid that doesn't know what he's doing. chances are low that would have an impact.

My Grand Theory (of everything) is that the counter is now counting the total number of visits to the site - not the number of simultaneous visitors.

Why? It has probably become self-aware. I think we should try to communicate with it.

(But who should make first contact? Depp, a suitable member of the staff, or a chosen representative of us weirdoes? Hm...)

The math doesn't really add up. The issue is that the overwhelming proportion of visitors are guests, not members. So if the adding up were true, and even if the self-aware counter was smart enough to reject duplicate visits by members (but not by unregistered guests, as there is no tracking), the counter would be very high by now.

Mm - I hadn't actually seen that high "currently active" numbers until today. (When I'm logged in the figure is typically quite low). But obviously this only strengthens my Grand Theory: the gD user counter has become self-aware.

Well, a countdown would only be possible if... let's say, the member numbers were to decrease... Sometimes accidents happen, and the server knows your IP address.

I, for one, welcome our new botnet overlords.

PS: on the plus side, the bot numbers don't seem to be increasing. The max was on 30 Nov and it's still holding. So some of the idiots running Win XP machines out there haven't booted those clunkers up lately.
