While the really long stories give the reader more of a chance to really connect with the characters, I think the shorter stories with a more defined beginning-middle-end can frequently have more impact, and be a lot easier to write. Instead of just kinda writing an indefinite sequence of events, having a whole story curve laid out (which I'm sure a lot of the folks posting here do) can really help frame the whole thing in your mind...
