Before I could open the WeChat app to check on the message, the phone rang. It was a call from my office in Germany (the bad thing about traveling to Asia is that the Europeans, who start work 6 hours later, keep bugging you until late in the night). It took a while to get the issue sorted out, and by the time I was done, the taxi had already arrived through the crawl of Shanghai traffic at the hotel.
It was only when I was about to get in to the shower that I remembered the message from Amy. I quickly grabbed the phone and checked the message. It was a
photo*. The photo was of her in a changing booth, showing her naked upper body. The dark brown nipple of her right breast was directly staring at the camera, while the left breast was shown in profile. From the backdrop it was clear that the changing room had only a curtain covering the entrance, so it was pretty daring for her to take that pic after all.
There were a couple of text messages after the photo. One was sent immediately after the photo, and asked, "So, did that make your wish come true?"
The second message was a few minutes later, with a self-doubting, "You don't like it?"
I immediately messaged back, telling her that I liked it, and that I admired her courage in taking that pic and sending it to me. Then I asked her how it felt. She replied back immediately and said that if felt scary but exciting at the same time, and that she has never done anything like that. She wrote again, saying that it is probably because I am a foreigner and that she would never do that with someone of her own race.
I asked her where she was right now, and she replied that she just reached home. I said that it's a shame we didn't get more time together, without her friend, and she sent back a wink, with "There is always tomorrow." I immediately followed up on that, and asked her out for dinner the next day, and she immediately accepted.
The next day, I had quite a lot of customer visits, but in between, I asked one of the admins to book a table for two at the Yi Long Court at the Peninsula hotel. It's an exquisite Cantonese restaurant located near the bank of the Huangpu River and famous for its ambience and steamed crab.
Amy was supposed to come straight from work, so I booked the table at 7:30. I got to my hotel around 5:00pm, and before I got changed, I messaged Amy.
