If you were an infantryman in the Napoleonic Wars, facing the French across a battlefield (or other nation, we're not picky), as the enemy advanced on your position; you would be with a musket waiting for the order to fire. "HOLD" the officer would shout from nearby, "Wait until you see the whites of their eyes!"
Then... "Fire!"
You would reload, ramming down the powder, the wadding and the bullet. But wait, you forgot to REMOVE the firing rod, you lose time. If you were attacked now you'd feel NUDE without the bayonet fixed.
