I thought about writing it up as a historic documentary. I'd tell how life there was a few thousand years ago when the devices were made of wood and bone. And then go through various periods of change. How advances in science and technology made for better times.
There would also be several points when men became free or freeer. Violence, rape, decay would rise. Eventually women would return to a peaceful time. In the historical arc, these would be times when outside influences swayed beliefs, or when a,war was needed for expansion and or population control. It would be the men, for the most part, that would go off to war.
It would end in the future where devices would be in implanted. They may be hardly noticed to the casual observer. The women too would have a tiny key implanted. Men would only be able to have erections in the presence of their keyholder or keyholders. Many men (some women too) would be rendered sterile disposing of bad genetic markers.
The work would be from this favored future viewpoint.
