i've used a number of chat programs that have lacked assorted features, such as the one suggested here. When i can't emphasize a certain word, i typically resort to something like this when chatting....
In this sentence, i really want you to pay attention to *this* word, so i've bookended it with asterisks.
But with that said, being able to bold or italicize one word only would certainly be nice.
