USA Immigration Information

ok so , heres the thing im thinking of moving to the USA but as a British citizen this comes with some problems , namely , work permits.

now I know on this site we have a large variety of people and im hoping we have some lawyers or people who know how it works.

so , I can get an ESTA which is a tourist visa to visit the united states for 2 years but I cant work.

there are so far only a H1B or H2B visas i can see working .. so the H1B requires a nice specialist job that is offered to me , but this means getting a nice job offer remotely from overseas .. not easy.

H2B so far I understand is the easier option , i move over on the esta then convert to the h2b when i get a normal crappy job.

is all this right? are there other ways? and .. help america doesnt want to let me in.

Can we just trade? You live here and I'll go there.

It's a lot easier to immigrate into Canada, and easier to find a job as well....

Hmmmm... I don't know if this is the best site to ask for that kind of help.

The ESTA permit to visit USA for 2 years (After that you just have to redo it) but as a tourist you cannot stay more than 90 days. So you can come and stay 90 days, go back to GB, and go back to USA the day after for 90 again etc

Isn't that like saying "hey I know you want to move to Portugal but you can also move to Turkey, it's also warm in the summer"? Haha.

Good luck by the way!

If you are planning to do that, make sure that you take into account all the factors. We get a lot of benefits here in the UK, especially in regards to healthcare. Despite recent changes we have an excellent NHS service. If you are going to live in the US you will not get any of the free medical services that every citizen here is so accustomed to.

I know people who have gone to live in America due to marriage and when they do visit their families in England they portray the vast differences in such services. You will need expensive medical insurance or suffer a lesser service. Unexpected medical needs can give big problems to US citizens who are not adequately insured. There are a lot of other differences due to the fact that America is driven by high finance and corporate business.

Now I’m not saying any of this is bad and I’m certainly not saying we have a better system, BUT you do need to be aware of the many differences.

^ ditto.

So many people are first to slag off the UK, but it's pretty awesome. I know the weather, civil rights (lulwhut) and some of the really annoying people who you would love to deport (Here's looking at you, Jedward!) but it's got a lot of things that we take for granted and don't realise. Now, don't get me wrong. I'd love to go to the US or Canada because VAT is so small. But yeah, I'd rather pay an extra 10% or so, and not worry if I get the sniffles.

Good luck though! :) Sorry I can't be more help with regards to the actual emigration thing, but the furthest afield I've gone is Spain. On a minibus. That was fun. No-one said, ever.

I (from the UK) have an L1 so I can go and work in the states for my employer, I can tell you that US visas the most horrific load of paperwork you will ever see. It's well worth simply paying a company to sort it all out for you. They will also know what the best options for you are. There's plenty of them out there.

With most normal full time jobs in the US, you have more than adequate healthcare and actually can see your preferred doctor in a matter of days instead of months like in the UK.

Standing up for America aside, it's hard to immigrate here without either being super good at a particular skill or marrying an American. (Been researching this lately :p) Fall in love? :p
