July 2018 Writing Competition
I have decided that I want to start a writing competition. Each month, there will be a new topic and to enter, you need to follow the rules/guidelines and post your entry in the thread.
After the deadline, we will create a poll and vote on the winner. The winner will receive entry into the Dungeon. Theme: Strugglin' What to write: Write a blog or piece of creative writing about a struggle you have faced or are currently facing. The struggle could be something physical or mental. It could be related to kink or not. It can be about you using kink to overcome struggles, or maybe about how kink things don't always go as planned. Guidelines:
Deadline: July 31, 2018 |

I was actually just talking to Matt about this struggle a while ago and how frustrating it was. It’s nice that this came up or I doubt I would have had the courage to post anything like this.
But here is my entry - Eevee’s never ending war! |
I have just started mine. It is here.
https://www.getdare.com/bbs/blog.php?b=87309 More of it will unfold later. But a query: for competition purposes does it all have to be entered at one time, or can it be by instalments, as it were, added bit by bit during the course of the month? |

UPDATE Just checked - I see now! This is the first time I've used a blog so am newbie on this! |
Would pee holding be considered a struggle??

Doh - mine didn't pan out properly.

I just want to clarify that the theme of the month is about personal struggles and how you overcome them. This can be something physical (ie. your weight, height, physical limitations, disabilites), emotional/mental (ie. depression, fear etc.) or obstacles you might face (ie. financial, living situation, etc.).
It doesn't have to involve kink, but it can. It can be about how kink has helped you overcome a personal struggle, or how your struggles impact your kinky life. It can be about how not everything always goes right in kink. However, please do not submit stories about bondage, being trapped, etc. and struggling. That is not the theme of the month. Thank you. |

Don't know if this link will work. It looks like it will. Thanks, Icemaiden, for your help. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this! Thanks to Butterfly for the suggestion! |
Just a reminder to submit your entries before July 31.

I think that being able to share something you struggled with is great, but I don't feel that you have to name and describe specific struggles to meet the theme of struggling. For example, my story involves exactly this kind of metaphor but a careful reader might discern that it is actually discussing struggles like self-love and reflection, and feelings of being trapped, desperate, confused, helpless and alone. I respect how everyone writes and a very straight-forward story can be very engaging and well-written. However, I would like it if other styles of writing and expressing feelings and issues could be considered as well. Not to mention that if I would write about my struggles in clear terms, it would violate the ToS as they are too graphic and the things that happened to me are illegal in all of the developed world. Edit; would it be OK for the voters to decide in their votes if they feel the story they read meets the theme? I would imagine if the theme was "littles" and someone wrote a story about how to wire your electric, the story simply would not receive any votes. (: In the end, not everyone takes the same meaning out of the same story, but it would be nice if people/stories weren't excluded simply because they were not understood. |

I am saddened that the story was looked over so casually, as it does express the theme of struggling. In a physical aspect as a metaphor, but from the dialogue one might guess there was more behind it. To hear that my struggle isn't as valid because I cannot express it in clear cut terms like other people can, is hurtful. I am glad it was still included but I hope you can perhaps have some consideration and instead of labeling something as "not really a struggle" take a step back and wonder if perhaps the other person was simply trying to express something that you did not quite understand. |
When choosing the dare of the month and writing of the month themes, I have to consider a lot of things. My main goal is to be as inclusive and fair as possible. As you might notice from other months themes, I usually give people the opportunity to submit a piece of creative writing or a blog to go with the theme.
However this month I made a choice to exclude creative writing because I wanted to focus on emotional and line writing to discuss real life struggles that people have. I knew it was a difficult topic and that some people would be breaking down walls in order to truthfully discuss these things. I know that some people when seeing the theme "struggles" would want to write about being in bondage or having to hold their bladder. And those stories would turn people on and would most likely win on a site like this. So I made the choice to not include them this time. I agree that people can use metaphors and symbols in fiction to illustrate real life struggles. But I made the choice to not include those this time. As the person who runs this competition, that was my choice. However there was an entry that didn't really fit into my specific criteria this month. I acknowledge that it might use metaphors and symbolism to still speak to the theme, however it didn't exactly fit the criteria. That isn't me judging something, that is a fact. But I didn't just discard that writing, I still included it in the voting. I don't understand how that is being unfeeling or exclusive. But alas, my point still stands. I run the competition and do it to the best of my ability. If you don't like it, there is nothing forcing you to participate. |
