Been awhile since I've posted a story but I wanted to give it another shot. I wrote this story awhile ago and haven't finished it (about 7 1/2 parts in). So I figured I might as well start posting it and if people like it i'll attempt to finish it.
Enjoy
Day 1.1: The First Breath of Vacation
Rob threw his duffle into the trunk of his SUV, the over-stuffed luggage wedged oddly into the corner, but it was good enough. And then Rob waited. It was 6:54 am, early enough to be up on a school day. However, by the grace of God, he didn’t have school today. Today was officially the first day of spring break: the last vacation before high school was finally over.
“Hey!” A lazy, feeble voice called from next door. Kenny, Rob’s neighbor since he could remember and long time friend, was shuffling across his lawn, dragging a full suitcase behind him. He was clearly tired, rubbing his eyes as if somebody had kicked sand into them. He finally reached the car, wheeling his suitcase around with all lack of care and positioning it for Rob to lift into the trunk with zero idea of doing it himself.
“Glad to see you up and wide awake,” Rob said jokingly, not minding too much as he struggled to lift the heavy suitcase in without scratching his car. After all, this vacation wouldn’t be happening without Kenny’s parents who were funding almost half of the entire trip’s costs. It was conservative to say Kenny’s parents were rich. The only reason Kenny was even his neighbor was because Kenny himself didn’t want to move during his school years, so his parents put up with the large (modest in their eyes) sized house they had in New York while keeping their massive sized house in North Carolina ready for them to move in the second Kenny graduated. Kenny was a junior, they still had another year to wait.
“FREEDOM!” someone called from down the street. Rob knew who it was but couldn’t see them from behind the trees that lined the street. Then, sure enough, Ricky came jogging down the sidewalk with a duffle similar to Rob’s.
“I’ll get in the back seat, I need to sleep for a few hours more,” Kenny told Rob.
“No prob,” Rob replied as Kenny climbed in and Ricky ran up, giving Rob a rather goofy man hug. Rob took Ricky’s bag and threw it in the trunk, then slammed the trunk shut.
“Finally, Spring Break baby!” Ricky announced before screaming, whooping and yeehawing at the top of his lungs before getting in the car. Rob started the car.
“Sailor’s Creek, here we come,” Rob announced and threw it in drive. From the suburbs of New York, they were driving down to the little-known but growing tourist location called Sailor’s Creek, Florida. After a lot of research, Rob decided this would be a great spot to go. It was on the gulf coast of Florida. It wasn’t too crazy but still well known enough to have other springbreakers partying there. And, with the obvious help of Kenny’s parents, a few odd-end jobs and a whole lot of begging, they could rent a beach-front condo for the whole break. Usually meant for four people, it was the perfect place to relax and have an awesome Spring Break.
Day 1.2: The Long Drive
Rob had been driving for an hour, and they still had a long road ahead of them. If they were lucky, they’d arrive at their condo sometime tomorrow after driving through the whole night. They had three able drivers and Rob was the first shift.
“So,” Ricky started, deciding to strike up a conversation after becoming bored from his ipod, “who all is going to be in the area?”
“Uhhh, let’s see,” Rob stated, rattling his brain alive to think. “Well I know Jerry and Jay are going to be there.”
“Those two guys in our math class? They’re nerdier than Kenny.”
“Hey! He’ll hear you and he’s a good friend of mine!”
“I know, I know but he’s sound asleep and you know he’s a nerd.” What Ricky said was true. Kenny was considered one of those shy nerdy kids but Rob still liked him, he was really nice and would be fine if he wasn’t so shy. “Ok, who else?”
“Ben Killman and some other guys from the football team will be just a couple towns north for a football training camp. I know some girls from the soccer team are going to be renting a small place somewhere in town. And Anna, one of the cheerleaders, will be staying somewhere in town too with a few friends.”
“Cool, we’ll have to call all of these people up once we get there!”
“Heck yes!” Rob was even more excited now. Kenny and Ricky were easily his two best friends. Kenny had always been his neighbor and even though Kenny was a year younger, he was still cool enough to have fun with. Ricky was Rob’s friend from the varsity swim team. They had met in middle school and were instant friends since that day. Ricky was the funny, crazy, outgoing kid that everyone loved to have around. Especially on Spring Break, it would be a blast.
“And what are we doing on your birthday?” Ricky asked.
“Oh yeah, right, I don’t know.” Rob had almost forgotten his birthday fell during Spring Break. That was just an added bonus, he’d be turning 18.
“We should have a party,” Ricky was getting over-excited now and Rob just nodded at his endless ideas. “We should play some truth or dare too.” Rob shot a look back at Kenny from his rearview mirror to make sure Kenny was asleep.
“You and your crazy dares again huh?” Rob asked, trying to keep his eyes on the road. From all this talk of friends, parties and now dares he was getting excited. He never assumed Ricky would want to play truth or dare again; it was something they hadn’t done since they were sophomores.
“Yeah man, it’ll be great this time,” Ricky said. “I found all sorts of cool ones online. It’s always fun when you and me play. Kenny will love it too. Especially if we play with some other kids too.”
“Sounds like a plan then,” Rob said.
