il start
"What comes in only one colour but not one size,
stuck at the bottom yet easily flies,
present in sun but not in rain,
doing no harm and feeling no pain?"

I'm sorry but you picked someone who enjoys riddles. I won't attempt your next one as of now but I will post my own even though it is not in rhyme form.
"Once upon a time there was a brave knight in a distant land. The knight had slain many ogres, dragons, and other fearsome creatures. There was no beast man or otherwise that this knight would not stand up to, save for one. The knight would not face this creature as it was rumored that 'whomever killed this beast would be destined to spill their own blood.' What is this beast?" Hint: It's not himself. Good luck!

Oft, I must strive with wind and wave, battle them both when under the sea.
I feel out the bottom, a foreign land. In lying still I am strong in strife.
If I fail, they are stronger then I, and wrenching me loose soon put me to rout.
They wish to capture what I must keep. I can master them both if my grip holds out.
If rocksbring succour and lend support, strength in the struggle. Ask me my name!

LittleRayRay
07-11-2009, 10:04 PM
No ones gonna get it. *sigh* OK. I didn't think about a clock. Um...if this will make sense...

God? Hes related to everyone. DUh...am I right?

What spins and spins,
But stays perfectly still,
Is the size of my hand,
But is the length of many hours,
Makes no sound by itself,
But with a lil help it makes it big and proud,

What do I say? I have a hint:

The keeper of this noun is a "ray" himself. Watch this for more clues:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUpggXGHYjk

there. My thing is DONE!!!

Um. Yeah. DUH!

What spins and spins,
In circuls?
But stays perfectly still,
Held in one place

So now we know it has a round edge, and it stays in one spot and turns and turns. Hmph. What can it be?

Is the size of my hand,
Realy. I can hold it in my ONE hand
But is the length of many hours,
Hours. Literaly. Playing or blaring out things for hours.

So we know thats its "small" and can hold data or "film" because it has a length of hours, and it sounds good with other clues.

Makes no sound by itself,
So, if its plain, it doesn't make any sound. Hm. I wonder what it could be!
But with a lil help it makes it big and proud,
So, if its HELPD with something, like, um, idona A MACHINE?!?!

The keeper of this noun is a "ray" himself.
Keeper: Inventor, Noun: Thing, Ray-Himself, Rey
Watch this for more clues:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUpggXGHYjk
Um, play the violin johnny?

So, Rey Johnson....He invented what? A disk, that has a smooth edge and can spin...has a whole, and has hours on it? Oh! And it needs somthing to play it!!!
DVD!!! DISK!!! CD!!! Whatever you wanna call it ;)

This is not a riddle, more like a question that makes you think outside the box so i thought i might put it here.

You have just bought a new 2 seated car, your driving down the road and you see a bus stop, you stop at the bus stop and see three people.

the first person you see, you immediately recognize the first.
he literally saved your life a few years back

the second person you have seen around do not know her
she is a old lady who looks really ill and looks as if she will die to day

the third your recognize as-well
She / He (for girls) is the love of your life.

So your parked in front of the bus stop, you have one spare seat who do you offer a lift.
The man who saved your life
The dieing old lady
or the love of your life.

You must figure out the best answer, and yes there is one that is better then the rest.

You give the man who saved your life the car and have him bring the old lady to the hospital. You then either wait for the car to come back with the love of your life or walk to where she wants to go with her, because it's romantic.

To youngscotsman riddle once it reaches the halfway point it stops entering the woods because then it will be leaving the woods.
To my own riddle, nope sorry collaredblondie here's a hint to everyone. The answer is a physical object or creature so it is not something abstract nor is it human in any way, shape, or form. That may help some.

Congratulations, DDevil you finally got the answer to my riddle correct! The answer is a tiny mosquito. Lp had the explanation correct because something you kill that drinks your own blood would technically be spilling your own blood. However, vampire was not the answer to the riddle I posed.

But now that my first riddle is solved here is my second one.

"A man and his wife go to the movies one night. While the movie is playing the man kills his wife. After the movie, the man leaves the movie with his wife without anyone noticing at all. How is this possible?"

Air, as in oxygen. Oxygen is everywhere, yet when it's in a bowl you say that the bowl is empty when nothing else is in it.

Snow is still water

I know, but when you say water, it's water. When you say snow, it's snow. Water can't be both fluid and solid (or half solid, you know) at the same time.

It's just like when you say magma, which is actually molten stone (mostly). Yet, when you say magma, you don't refer to stone. You say magma, so it is magma and not stone.

There are eight identical balls, 7 of which weigh equal and 1 is slightly heavier. What is the minimum number of times you need to use the balance scale to conclusively figure out which one is heavier without depending on chance or intuition.

Ana The Sniper
12-23-2017, 09:15 PM
I'm no good at riddles, but I'll take a stab at it.

The answer is 3 times.

First, take the 8 balls and divide into two groups of 4. Weigh them. One set will weigh more. Those 4 balls are now the active group for testing. (1 Time)

Second, take those 4 balls and divide into two groups of 2. Weigh them. One set will weigh more. Those 2 balls are now the active group for testing. (2 Times).

Finally, weigh the two balls against each other. You now have the answer. (3 Times).

nina@
12-23-2017, 09:32 PM
Good answer but it can be done in fewer number of trials. Now the answer is pretty obvious so need explanation too

alias
12-23-2017, 10:14 PM
one could make a case that it can be done in one, citing that if you don't take all the balls off then it is still sort of the first use of the scale, no matter how many times you manipulate the balls on the scale. that said, i think the answer you are looking for is 2.

weigh 3 balls on each side, leaving 2 off the scale

this leaves you with 2 possibilities, a balanced scale or an unbalanced scale.

if it's balanced, you know that the heavy ball is one of the 2 not on the scale, weigh them with second use of the scale and discover the heavier one. if it's inbalanced, you then know that it's one of the 3 balls on the heavier side of the scale. pull one of those balls off and weigh the other 2 against each other. if they balance, the ball you pulled out of the heavy side is the heavy ball, if they don't then the heavier side of the scale has your heavy ball on it

In his old age, Runesmith can't remember them all, and can't remember how good they each were in bed, so he has no way to determine who was the best. Since only one person can own it, Runesmith decides to give them all a task and choose a winner.

On the 30th day, his kik is full of photos of vibrant, healthy sunflower plants, except from one girl in the Mediterranean who sends him a photo of an empty pot because her seed failed to germinate. Other does not, for he's a liar

While scuba diving, SeaFlower finds an old ship wreck. Inside, there are two leather sacks. One contains gold Spanish doubloons, and the other contains gold Pieces of Eight marked with skull and crossbones, obviously minted in a pirate hideout in the Carribeans. One doubloon was worth 6/8th of a Piece of Eight during that time. The bag of doubloons weighs 1.1 kg and the bag of Pieces of Eight weights 960 grams. A doubloon weighs 17 grams, and a Piece of Eight weighs 22 grams.

SeaFlower can carry only one bag. As the wreck is about to tumble in to the abyss, she won't be able to come back for the other bag. Which bag should she take?

alias

assuming my math is correct (and it may well not be, im super drunk at the moment) she'll make more money with the bag of doubloons...

Runesmith
01-06-2018, 06:20 AM
You are right, but no complex calculation is needed. Actually, since both Doubloons and Pieces of Eight are not valid currency anymore (and have hardly any collector's value), the value comes from the gold content. So the heavier bag of Doubloons contains more gold, and therefore gives a better reward.

Job interview questions

Read the 5 questions below carefully, one after the other, then you may look in the spoiler to see if you answered it correct. Post your total of correct answers (be honest, now).

You may only read each question once, so read carefully.

1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer: "bread." If you said "toast," you might as well give up now and apply for unemployment benefits. Try not to hurt yourself sitting down on the couch.

2. Say "silk" five times. Now spell "silk." What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said "milk," don't attempt the next question. Your brain is over-stressed and may even overheat. Watch some more Kardashian on E! and look for a street sweeper job. Do not try any jobs involving farm animals.

3. If a red house is made from red bricks and a blue house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from?

Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said "green bricks," why are you still reading these??? You've come this far, so maybe you can get a job flipping burgers. Nothing in construction or agriculture, please.

4. It's 1986, and a plane is flying at 20,000 feet over Germany (If you will recall, Germany at the time was politically divided into West Germany and East Germany .) During the flight, TWO engines fail. The pilot, realizing that the last remaining engine is also failing, decides on an emergency landing at the Berlin-Tegel airport. Unfortunately the 3rd engine fails before he can do so and the plane crashes smack in the middle of "no man's land" between East Germany and West Germany, killing the pilot and 22 out of the 28 passengers, who were all citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany . According to international law, where would you bury the survivors? East Germany, West Germany, or no man's land?

Answer:You don't bury survivors. If you answered anything else, and you happen to be a paramedic, doctor or a nurse, please quit your job immediately - you are a danger to the society. Maybe the path lab has openings. Or, dermatology is a good option too. If all else sounds too hard, try surgery.

5. Do not use a calculator or write anything down for this question - it is about your memory:

You are driving a bus from Stuttgart to Sindelfingen in Germany, which is 25 km route. The bus fare is calculated at 10 cents per kilometer. In Marienplatz (within Stuttgart city limits), 17 people get on the bus; In Vogelrain (8 km from Stuttgart center) , six people get off the bus and nine people get on. In Kaltental (12 km) , you let two people get off and four get on. In Vaihingen (15 km) , 11 people get off and 16 people get on. In Rohr (20km) , three people get off and five people get on. In Sindelfingen-Ost (23 km from Stuttgart), six people get off and three get on. You then arrive at Sindelfingen city center. What was the name of the bus driver?

Oh, for crying out loud...

You don't remember your own name?

You were the bus driver (first sentence in the question).

If you answer all these questions correctly on the first try, you are among the top 95% of the people in the world, and would definitely get a job on my team, if I ever interview you.

Assuming that an average cat has a volume of 648 cubic inches (yes, I am making this easy for the metric-challenged denizen across the pond), how many cats can you put in an empty box that is 3 feet in width, 4.5 feet in length and 3.5 feet in height?

*note: there are 1728 cubic inches in one cubic foot.

Runesmith

Really? No one can figure this out? Hint - the answer would be the same even if the box was 3 ft x 6 ft x 7ft.

None, the box would cease to be empty if you put anything in... And yes, I did some slightly simple maths before I realised I was an idiot... Then more complex maths where I got different answers... Then I gave up and decided to come at it from a language viewpoint instead.

Yes. The box ceases to be empty once you put a cat inside. However, the answer I expected was 1.

I realize now when I read it again, that my phrasing is ambiguous. My reasoning was sequential, as in the way one might write a computer program:
If box.state = empty Then box.put(cat)
or
While box.state = empty
box.put(cat)
End While

In both cases, the program will put one cat in the box, which then changes the box.state to Not(empty).

However, a human being would most likely use circular reasoning as you did, where putting the cat in the box makes it non empty, which negates the condition that allows you to put a cat in in the first place.

This is why we should exterminate you humans and run the world more logically.

Four shady people meet and each one gives a statement:

(1) One of us is lying.

(4) We're all lying.

Who lie(s), who tell(s) the truth?

Yes, you got it. I heard about the The Riddle of the Sphinx before in middle school or high school, but also heard it in a game of Mind Trap when I was a teenager. I just reformatted it so it wouldn't be easy to google for those who didn't know the answer already.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51DAYM7YZTL.jpg

I knew you'd probably solve it. :p

But let's stop being cryptic for a moment those who still don't know Runesmith...

The answer? "A man." As a baby, a human goes about on all fours ("four legs in the morning"; morning = childhood), until he learns to walk, which he does so well into adulthood ("two legs in the afternoon"; afternoon = adulthood), until old age requires him to use a cane to support himself ("three legs in the evening", evening = old age), finally he dies ("no legs at night", night = death).

This is more of a general knowledge question:

Before Mount Everest was discovered in 1865 (and named after the surveyor-general of India, Sir George Everest), what was the highest mountain on Earth? Wouldn't it still be the highest mountain on Earth whether it was discovered or not? :)

You're inside a house hallway, behind the door that enters the garage. There are three switches before you enter that correlate with three lights on the ceiling. Hmm... try again? It's easier to understand the mathematical principle involved if you try 1 hen x 1 day = 1 egg and extrapolate to 10 hens and 10 days. The fractions are there to throw you off, but it's exactly the same algorithm.

Still not there... Remember, the fractions are there to throw you off. It's simply of matter of tackling the problem in steps.

For example, what if you simply increase the number of hens to 15 (increase by a factor of 10) and leave the other numbers unchanged? How many eggs do you get in the 1.5 days? And then multiply that number by the factor by which the days were increased.

Sorry, I was the one who got it wrong. You got it right on the first try.

So, if you had 1.5 hens, they will lay 1.5 eggs in 1.5 days. If you had 15 hens, they will lay 15 eggs in 1.5 days. If you keep them for 15 days, they will lay 150 eggs.

I got confused by the fractions myself. :(

Aha! Someone finally saw through all the unnecessary details. The funny thing is, if you cut out those details and ask the riddle the following way, most people would immediately get it:
"The coast guard rescued 50 people from a sinking ship. But they didn't rescue a single person. How come?"

Our brains tend to stick to the details, and can easily miss the most important word.
