What would make you contact someone via messenger, Skype, etc?

I was bemoaning my luck about not finding anyone on this site, not even casual play, pic swaps or even a good online friend. I find the chat room hard to get involved and a few people commented that they wouldn't contact people "off site - i.e. Skype, Kik, etc"

Have you contacted people from Gd in this manor?
What made you do it or why have you never done it?
