Slave Economy

I saw a thread called Slave Auction, where masters were given a set number of points to bid on an ever-increasing amount of slaves. This struck me as appealing in some ways, but impractical in others, since it doesn't accurately reflect the way economies actually work. Instead, I propose this alternative.

To begin with, all new slaves belong to the bank (operated by myself). These slaves will start off worth 100 gold each. Each new master must register with the bank to buy their first slave, and they each begin with 300 gold. Slaves can be bought from the bank on a first-come first-serve basis, although the bank will not sell more than one slave to a single master in a row. Masters are required to keep track of their own wealth.

Once you have your slave, you may use them as you see fit, provided it doesn't break their limits. This includes selling them to another player at the slave's posted value. As this is a free market, buyers and sellers can decide among themselves how best to work out a transaction. You may wish to sell directly to someone, or maybe hold an auction. In any case, once a transaction has occurred, please make a post so that anyone engaging in the slave market may see who owns which slave.

Every day at midnight EST (UTC-5), every slave that has been owned by the same master for two or more days (i.e. the first midnight after the 48 hour mark has passed) will accrue in value by 1%. This means that a slave that was worth 100 gold will be worth 101 gold. This ensures that the economy can continue to grow. Purely owning a slave for a significant amount of time adds to its value, making slaves a valuable commodity, similar to art. Slaves are required to keep track of their own values.

To stimulate economic growth, masters may apply for a loan from the bank. Based on slave feedback, the interest rate of this loan may be high or low (good masters get lower rates, to incentivize their continued purchasing of slaves). To apply for a loan, please put the phrase "Loan application" in bold at the top of your post, so that it can be easily seen. This way, slaves can see if someone is applying for a loan, and can PM me to weigh in on their previous masters' abilities. All loans must be paid back in full within two weeks. On the midnight after the 14-day mark, if the loan has not been repaid with the posted interest, the offending master's slaves will be repossessed. You may, of course, ask other masters for financial help, if they're willing to give it. If necessary, you may offer to rent yourself out as a slave, while still retaining ownership of your own. In this case, you will not start off as the bank's property; anyone willing to buy you will pay you directly. You may work out the terms of your agreements yourself.

Misuse or neglect of slaves may result in their confiscation. Slaves may report if their owner has been missing for an extended period without explanation, or if they are intentionally breaking their limits, and the Association for Slave Safety (also run by myself) will take the necessary steps. ASS may remove the slave from the master without compensation, and the master will be put on probation. A second offense will result in that master being banned from the Slave Economy.

I suspect people aren't quite grasping the concept here. There are currently five slaves available for purchase for 100 gold apiece. There are three masters so far, each of whom can, at any time, simply make a post saying that they are buying one of the slaves. Then, they just deduct 100 gold from their wealth level, and that slave is theirs to do with as they please.

With slave auctions, it is common to inspect a slave prior to buying to ensure that one is not wasting money on poor quality. Some ways of doing this would be to check a person's profile (such as those you've linked in the OP) or to ask questions relating to a slave's behavior.

So, I might want to ask a few questions for some slaves to answer. Should I be doing this in-thread or via PM?

No offense at all, but I personally find this needlessly complicates things a bit. All in all this thread is pretty much a fancy way to pair up Masters and slaves. No need to load it up with all kinds of rules and procedures.

In any case, if a Master remains inactive for a long period of time with no word to his or her sub, then that's their loss. I don't see why the sub should have to work to escape from an owner with poor communicative skills.

I honestly didn't think this would get so popular so quickly, but I'll do my best to keep everything up to date on a regular basis. I must ask that slaves please make sure to show who owns them and what their value is in their signatures, and that masters do the same with slaves they own and their current wealth. Slaves, please make sure to add to your own values when appropriate. As these numbers can be verified by checking the time stamps on posts, please be honest with your dealings.

I noticed an issue with this idea, exponential inflation. The value of the G is continually decreasing as more Master's join, bringing gold into the market, slaves values continually increasing based on just daily valuation, and no means for Masters to produce an income. Loans do not stimulate the economy if there is no means for a Master to make back the interest. Even if a loan interest is 0.5% per day, the Master that takes a loan to buy a slave must sell that same slave after 14 days to pay back as that is the only manner of making money he/she has.

There needs to be a form of income for the Master's aside from buying and selling slaves so that the economy can be stimulated in that manner. With no income, the slaves will grow to levels of value that no Master can afford.

Now, I don't have any really good ideas for this. Maybe offering slaves for entertainment, or otherwise putting slaves to work with menial tasks like writing lines or something that have to have pictures posted, then a slave is being used to provide a Master with G (ok, so maybe I do have a good idea) but these methods of income should be provided by the bank, tasks that a Master must make his slave do to earn G.

Maybe offer a limited number of entries, say the first 5 Masters to get their slaves to upload a picture of 100 written lines of "____________________" gets 100g each. Then that gives the Master's reason to put their slaves to use, the Master's can then use that as reason to reward or punish a slave if they were able to make money for them or maybe threaten to put them up for sale or rent them out to a particularly cruel master for causing the Master to not get the G in time.

I've decided to institute the practice of controlled imports. Those slaves that are controlled cannot be purchased automatically; instead they must be contacted through personal messages and they have the final say in who can buy them. The inflation caused by an increase in masters will be matched by the deflation caused by increased value. Since slaves are the only good in this market, if their prices go up, the currency loses value, but there is also more of it. This is fine to an extent, although it will eventually lead to an accumulation of wealth in the lucky few masters who were wise/lucky enough to get as many slaves as they could while they were cheap. This reflects the state of most modern economies; most of the wealth is condensed among a few really rich people, which is bad for most people. I had hoped this thread would illustrate that point someday, but you've seen through my ruse already.

To circumvent this, I've opened a new thread, called the Slave Public Works (http://www.getdare.com/bbs/showthread.php?p=1160920#post1160920)thread, where slaves can be put to work. Although this doesn't accurately reflect how real world economies work, the bank will provide stipends to masters, thus promoting activity and industry by injecting money into the economy. In this way, active users will become richer, instead of just the ones who got in on the ground floor. I'm looking for ideas for ways for slaves to earn money for their masters, so if anyone has any, please post them in the other thread.

Being able to put slaves to work is a good idea, a market rarely functions on one thing alone, it may help if you have a smaller inflation rate, even if its something like 0.2% per day, (for those who dont buy anyone thats 300, 301, 302, 303... etc initially, (minimum raise of 1 a day))
this means the value of the money will increase at a slightly lower rate to that of those with slaves but eventually a slave on the market will be free.
Possibly a system where an unowned slave devaluated could work (lose 0.5% after 48 hours unowned for example) taking into account retraining and the flood of materials initially to the market
these both would have to be kept track of by the master or slave respectively

I have traditionally acted as a submissive, but of late, I have noticed several dommish feelings cropping up at times, so I consider myself to be a switch, and I would hate to discriminate against my fellow greedy sluts.

I think, however, that it should not be that simple for a slave to become a master. You will not have the 300 gold privilege that natural-born freemen have; instead, you will have to work your way up to being able to make your initial purchase. This reflects the difficulties newly emancipated blacks in a post-civil war US faced in transitioning from owning nothing to being legally recognized citizens.

Slaves interested in becoming emancipated need only PM me as such. What this entails is that, essentially, you are allowed to own your own wealth. If you are owned by a master already, you will instead become their indentured servant, and work done in the Public Works thread (still under construction) will earn you both gold in a 50-50 ratio (for simplicity). In other words, a task that earns 10 gold will earn 5 gold for the servant and 5 gold for the master.

You will also be allowed to take out loans to quickly gain capital. As soon as you have enough money, you can start purchasing your own slaves. If you wish to become truly free, though, you will need to buy yourself from your old master at your listed value. In addition to their listed limits, emancipated slaves have the additional, state-mandated limit that masters cannot order them anything to do with their wealth, including their slaves. Your money is yours to do with as you please.

Additionally, a slave may PM me to ask to become a full citizen immediately. In this case, ASS will remove the slave from their master, compensate the master for the listed value of the slave, and award the slave a 300 gold stipend. I mean, I don't see why you can't just pull yourself up by the bootstraps, but here comes the liberal, leftist government, interfering with the basic human right to own other humans.
