No, alternative means exactly that. alternative to "mainstream". thus, if a band goes "mainstream", it shan't be the alternate to it.

Prog Met - I love the complexity and musicality of the time sig changes, tempo changes, technicality of how it's played through the use of all instruments.
Ind/Elec Met - I love the fusion of 2 different styles to create a whole new thing.
