8 New Unread Messages Cant Find
I have a notification saying i have 8 new messages but when i check my inbox (which is not full) i dont see any.

I'm having the same issue, except with just 1 unread message. I can't see any unread messages yet it still says I have one. I tried logging off and logging back in again and its still there.

same happened to me. I emptied my inbox out and the notification went away.

I have not had this issue but if I had to guess, perhaps it is because the spam bots messaged you and if you hadn't deleted those messages, perhaps the system is still showing the notification because the message should be there but no longer is because the spam bot was booted.
(Not sure if that made any sense or not -- I know what I'm trying to say in my head but for some reason am having a tough time putting it into words on here)

I have a seven unread messages notifications too. Must be the spam as I had a couple before I left for a couple days.

I had the same issue. I sent a PM to somebody and was able to get it to go away. Do you think it has something to do with them fixing the issue with all of the bots?

I had the same issue. What I found was that in the last page of my messages I found a message with a sent date in 1969. Since it has no name, you can't click on it. If you select the little box then delete it, it will eliminate that unread message. Hope that helps!

Sorry everyone! This was definitely me removing the spam messages directly form the database. Emptying your inbox should fix. I have a way to zero that count for everyone but am hesitant to do so. If I have some extra time soon I'll see if I can write a script to recount that number or something.

Solution!
Cause
A bot attack in July 2017 that spammed PMs to all users. The administrator has removed all the PMs but could not adjust the counter of unread PMs without writing a script (which hasn't been done). Solution Check the box at the top right of the PM list to select all your PMs. Scroll down to the lower-right corner of the PM list and mark all the messages as read.
