Help me terrify myself

hi 29/f here and I just found this:

and since being afraid really turns me on, i am dying to do it.

But i was hoping to get a little input on how to alter it or add to it to ensure that i am as frightened as possible.

I've already thought to have a computer play scary sounds randomly, footsteps, creaky floorboards, maybe record my back door opening and closing. So suggestions for sounds and where i might find some good ones would be awesome.

Suggestions for the movie will also be greatly appreciated, something really terrifying please

Movies! My territory

I can recommend:
Scream - great slasher flick, with nice home invasion aspect (sutably worrying if you can't get away)
Halloween - pretty similar to Scream in reasoning
A Nightmare on Elm Street - again similar reasoning
Saw - includes some nice home invasion/kidnap. combine it with predicament bondage for what would be an interesting effect
Romsemarys Baby - this is a slow burn, and just plain creepy
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari - real classic and the b&w really helps the scary
Suspiria - Argento's best is a triumph of visceral onslaught
Let The Right One In - just plain creepy (and i mean Swedish original)
[Rec] - probably the best found footage horror. dark, tense, visceral and ultimately very very real (and i mean Spanish original)

My recommendation would be [Rec]. It's just fantastic through and through. To get the full effect from your challenge the film should be creepier and slower. Anything with a home invasion is obvously helpful to building the dread in you (or just go nuts and pick an Argento film and watch copious gore galore).
As i said above combine watching Saw with some form of predicament bondage. That could be a really interesting time, imagining you're almost in the movie... ok i may have just creeped myself out with that idea...

For a movie, I recommend Silent Hill, or Poltergeist.
For sounds, I recommend a girl screaming, some whispering, and banging on a door.

i don't think foreign language would work that well, reading subtitles seems like it might distract from the tension. [Rec] sounded good except for that, i agree that a slow burn would be best, i think gore might not have the best effect.

i like the idea of predicament bondage and saw, as i love predicament bondage, but i've seen saw, (as well as scream, halloween, nightmare on elm st, and rosemay's baby) and i think a new one would work better. So i'll consider the cabinet..., suspira and Let the right one in.

There is always a downside with subtitles, it's a shame as most of the best horror movies are foreign language. So probably count out Cabinet and Let The Right One In as well

Other ideas, in english :
Peeping Tom - this one's twisted to the core and has a unique pov
Repulsion - (can't believe i forgot this) not so scary, but really creepy and psychological
Neon Demon - not strictly horror, but very few films creeped me out as much as this one

the movies that get to me the most are the ones where i can't stop envisioning the "bad guy (being, thing etc.)" being in my own house, so supernatural ones have an advantage since they can get in no matter how locked the doors are

Obviously you need to turn off all the lights in your house. If it is practical, leave all your window shades up, so anyone could be outside looking in.

More complicated: freeze some water in some small plastic cups. On the night you plan on scaring yourself, take the ice blocks out of the cups. Use them as legs, and put a large pot filled with other pots in it on top, preferably by the edge of a counter or table. And make sure one of the "legs" is an actual plastic cup. At some point during the night, the ice "legs" will melt and the plastic cup won't - this should throw the whole thing out of balance and cause them to come crashing to the floor at a random moment.

Sure, you know it is coming sometime, but jump-scares work every time. And...huh, I just thought...what if an intruder takes advantage of the noise of clattering pots and pans to sneak into the house?

For your sounds, you should find a series of small bumps, scratches, doors, creaking etc. Record a period of white noise, maybe 5 minutes, add it to the playlist until you have more audio than you have films to watch and set it on randomise.
You might hear a noise, you might not. It'll keep the element of suspense and you'll wonder if it was your audio or a real intruder.

i'm torn on leaving the shades/curtains open, open one hand as you say it might allow people to look inside and see how vulnerable i am, but it will let light in from the street lights and make it let dark and creepy

The pots and table idea is brilliant! i will definitely do that!
i'm wondering if i could set up piles on each corner and use slightly different sized "legs". that might make it give me 2 or 3 scares instead of just one?
and thank you for the thought that that noise might cover the sound of an intruder

yes that sounds good. you're right the noises should be all the time, periods of no sound will be important to fuck with my nerves as well
