For sleeping, start with something with a diameter you can take without much resistance, use that for the first 2-3 days, then go larger on the next couple of nights, only increase in size, once you can take it without pain or alot of resistance.
And always use something you can insure will not go all the way in, or to be safe, tie a string to the end of it so you can extract it if needed.
