The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe

Spoiler:
The story, as has been well trailed, is based on the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The opening sequence reminded him of the start of the first Star Wars movie - but on a starliner, which starts to disintegrate.

The Doctor is running or falling down a corridor and is ejected into space trying to get himself into an empty spacesuit.

A bit like the Bond movie from a few years back, he catches up with the suit as he falls to Earth.

Titles then go up.

Madge then comes across the classic sci-fi crater in a typically Home Counties setting in (what turns out to be) 1938, the Doctor has crashed to Earth but survived unscathed - although he has his space suit helmet the wrong way round. Madge helps him back to the Tardis, although it seems to be a normal police box.

The Doctor says that he owes her one and to wish for him if he can ever help.

Three years later, and Reg Arwell, Madge's husband is dead, with his plane having gone down over the Channel. Madge is taking the kids away to a country retreat for Xmas and isn't willing to tell them their father has perished.

When they arrive at the large house in the country, the Doctor finally prises open the front door, introducing himself as the caretaker. He has changed the old gloomy mansion to make it as fun as possible for the two kids. Especially with hammocks!

Madge doesn't recognise him as she had only ever met him before with him wearing a space suit (with the helmet the wrong way round).

In addition to making the kids room a paradise of toys and games, the Doctor has left a big present by the Christmas tree..it's this that opens onto Narnia.

The kids get up on Xmas eve night and the boy opens it, finding a snowy, foresty world on the other side. He goes through and finds a world of natural Xmas trees with baubles which turn into Tolkeinesque Ents when you touch them.

The boy follows the Ent, (although the audience has still to see it and just know it's "growing" very fast).

Then the Doctor and the daughter go through to follow him and they end up in a lighthouse with the tree people trying to put a halo on the boy.

Tuards are comedic and very funny rather than serious and the reference to The Caves of Androzani is that they are from Androzani Major and will harvest the forest.

That'll do for now, eh?
